Two of our beloved Community Papers, the Kanata Kourier and the West Carleton Review, are no longer in print. These newspapers were an integral part of our communities, where we could read about our neighbours, our volunteers, and keep up to date with the many exciting events taking place in our communities. I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who worked tirelessly on these papers from journalists to editors, photographers to columnists. Your hard work reporting on our community did not go amiss and we thank you! And welcome to the Community Voice!!
The older members of our communities have a lot to offer, from experience and knowledge, to their ability to look at the bright side of life. I had the honour of joining in the All Seniors Care Games to speak at the Opening Ceremonies and present medals at the Closing Ceremonies. Under the theme “Laughter is the Best Medicine,” spirits were high and smiles were abundant. Congratulations to all of the participants and a massive thank you to the staff at the Courtyards on Eagleson Retirement Residence for putting on these fantastic games!
I had the pleasure of spending time with the Kanata Chinese Seniors this month and listen to their thoughts, concerns, and great stories. They are an active, energetic, and dynamic group who set such an example of community engagement and inclusion! They are currently rehearsing a play based on their lives and will be performing it in the coming months. I cannot wait to see what they come up with!
February is a great month in the National Capital Region! When the weather is the coldest, we gather together to celebrate the winter and all the activities we can participate in. What a joy it was to join community members in serving pancakes at both the Community Leader’s Brunch to launch Winterlude and the Kanata-Hazeldean Lions Club Winter Carnival! Thank you so much to all of the volunteers who helped put these marvellous days together, making a space for families to celebrate the winter!
Another huge thank you to the volunteers of the Fitzroy Winter Carnival who put on events and festivities for four days straight! From Trivia Night to the Outdoor Hockey League, there was something for the whole family. Thank you for making our communities a little brighter in these cold months!
I was able to pop into some schools in Kanata-Carleton and speak with students. Thank you to Kanata North Chinese School for having me and my colleagues over to celebrate the Lunar New Year! The school just opened last September in our community and I couldn’t be happier to welcome them at this celebration. I was thrilled to represent Minister Navdeep Bains at Holy Redeemer Elementary School to announce the CanCODE program which will allow young students the opportunity to learn how to code. Thank you for hosting me and I can’t wait to see the amazing things these students will achieve!
